In Włodzimierz Pawlak’s interpretation, the game of “tic-tac-toe” becomes a visual metaphor for rivalry and conflict. The completed match depicted on the canvas, won by the cross—associated with masculinity—suggests a symbolic resolution of tension. The white background, characteristic of the artist’s practice, conveys austerity and finality, while the black elements underscore the gravity of the confrontation. Expressive, energetic brushstrokes hint at an underlying intensity that transcends the simplicity of the game. In a broader social context, the work comments on contemporary disputes and the mechanisms through which dominance is asserted.
Włodzimierz Pawlak (born April 15, 1957 in Korytów near Żyrardów) is an acclaimed Polish painter, performer, poet and art theorist whose work has played a significant role in the Polish art scene since the 1980s. Pawlak graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he studied under Rajmund Ziemski and also began working as a lecturer in 1986. He was one of the co-founders of the avant-garde art group “Gruppa,” which in the 1980s took bold actions commenting on the socio-political situation in Poland during martial law.
