Limited Edition Gallery is beginning a new collaboration with Stara Papiernia in Konstancin-Jeziorna, creating new contexts in which selected artists can present Polish contemporary art. At the heart of this initiative is a commitment to accompanying artists with distinctive and recognisable artistic languages on their creative journeys, supporting them as they steadily build their position within the art market.
The partnership with Stara Papiernia marks another stage in the strategy Limited Edition has been developing in recent years. Between 2023 and 2024, the Gallery collaborated with Warsaw Marriott Hotel, where it presented exhibitions by Aleksandra Kujawska, Professor Antoni Janusz Pastwa and Ida Karkoszka. The collaboration with Stara Papiernia opens a new chapter in this idea — bringing together art, an exceptional setting and meaningful institutional support to strengthen the presence on the art market of artists championed by the Gallery.
For many years, Stara Papiernia has held a special place on the map of Konstancin-Jeziorna. Its distinctive character stems from the meeting of the historic architecture of a former paper mill with a carefully curated selection of boutiques, restaurants, cafés and services. Art, present throughout its spaces, is also an important part of the identity of the place, giving it an individual and recognisable character.
The year 2026 marked another stage in the development of Stara Papiernia. The expansion of the complex created new spaces and made room for new brands and concepts, while preserving the qualities that have defined the place for years. Contemporary architecture now harmoniously complements the historic part of the complex, while its increased scale has not diminished the intimacy and distinctive atmosphere of Stara Papiernia.
A Place That Remembers Paper
It is no coincidence that Łukasz Zbroja’s exhibition is being presented here. The papermaking traditions of Jeziorna date back to the 18th century, while the history of the buildings that now house Stara Papiernia begins in the years 1836–1838. It was then, on the initiative of the Bank of Poland, that the so-called Upper Mill was established, designed by Jan Jakub Gay.
It was here that the first machine for the continuous production of paper in the Polish lands was installed. The machine began operating in 1838, marking a turning point in the history of papermaking in Jeziorna and opening the industrial chapter in the history of this site.
Over the following decades, the buildings changed functions as the complex underwent successive transformations, mergers and modernisations. In time, part of the complex was also used to store textile material employed in paper production. Today, the historic walls of Stara Papiernia once again bring together different worlds: past and present, commerce and culture, everyday life and art.
Zbroja’s Tapestries
Here, history meets the contemporary language of Łukasz Zbroja — a painter, sculptor and draughtsman who remains deeply attuned to tradition while transforming it through contemporary means of expression.
In his sculptural practice, the artist readily turns to unconventional materials. His three-dimensional forms are created, among other things, from textile remnants. Zbroja has coined his own term for this technique: “szmata malarska”, literally “painter’s rag”. The exhibition will include, among other works, his 2023 sculpture “Walking Woman”, made using szmata malarska and papier-mâché.
The painterly dimension of the exhibition is equally important. An attentive viewer will discover on the canvases references to artists and paintings from the history of art. Yet these quotations, associations and traces of the past are not simple borrowings. They are transformed through the artist’s individual visual language and incorporated into multilayered contemporary compositions.
The manner in which the works are displayed is equally significant. Large-scale canvases and carpets are suspended freely in space, without stretchers, evoking associations with historical tapestries. Their monumental scale is combined with a multilayered and multidimensional painting technique, while the tradition of textile art is subjected to a contemporary reinterpretation.
In this way, Zbroja’s Tapestries emerge — works suspended between painting, material and object, between history and the present, affirming the idea that the end is the beginning.
