Joseph Wilkoń turns 85 in 2015. A hell of a talented painter, illustrator, sculptor and set designer. He is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding Polish artists. He began studying painting in 1950. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow doing a diploma in the studio of Adam Marczyński . At the same time, he studied art history at Jagiellonian University.

After graduation, he quickly joined the ranks of Poland's top illustrators. His output in this field consists of nearly two hundred books, both for children and adults. The publications he illustrated have been translated into more than 20 languages.

The artist's works are instantly recognizable due to the characteristic line, dynamically treated color spots accompanied by great graphic discipline. The artist has a unique ability to synthetically reproduce the shape of an animal or landscape element with a few brush or pen strokes.

The artist is most likely to depict animals and nature. His works are real, they do not beautify or idealize nature. While Wilcon is rarely interested in humans, the psychological portraits of animals he creates are very much portraits of people. Using an animal as a metaphor, a lot can be said about humans.
In the early 1990s. The artist became interested in sculpture, which soon became as important to him as painting. Out of wood and sheet metal, he creates a huge bestiary - "Wilkonia's Ark"- of fish, birds, bats and a host of other animals, which constantly roam and are exhibited in more and more places in Poland and around the world.

Jozef Wilkoń is most often associated with illustration activity, in its very essence being a work on a given subject. The artist has also successfully cultivated his own work, which is less frequently exhibited in showrooms.

Paintings, which are not book illustrations, as well as unusual sculptures made by Jozef Wilkoń will be presented at the exhibition that begins the jubilee of the GREAT ARTIST.
